Tesla Updates Autopilot Following “Recall”
Tesla initiated a software update for its Autopilot system in about 2 million vehicles, following a safety recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This update is a response to a two-year NHTSA investigation focused on accidents involving stationary first-responder vehicles.
The software update, which Tesla has agreed to implement despite not fully agreeing with NHTSA's conclusions, aims to prevent driver misuse of the Autopilot system. Key enhancements include more prominent visual alerts, simplified Autosteer engagement, and additional checks to ensure drivers maintain attention and hand presence on the steering wheel. Notably, repeated failure to adhere to these requirements could lead to suspension from using the Autosteer feature.
This development has sparked criticism from media outlets and the public, many of whom misinterpreted the software update as a recall requiring physical servicing. Since inception, Tesla has faced a number of recalls, almost all of which are resolved with an over-the-air software update.
Rivian’s Commercial Vans Expand Past Amazon
Rivian announced a commercial fleet partnership with AT&T, its first collaboration outside of Amazon for its commercial business. Starting early next year, AT&T will incorporate these models into its fleet.
Previously, Rivian had an exclusive agreement with Amazon, which invested $700 million in 2019 and committed to purchasing over 100,000 vans as part of the Climate Pledge. This agreement, now concluded, opens doors for Rivian to expand its customer base.
Rivian plans to prioritize larger fleet deployments, with an increase in deliveries expected in 2025. The Rivian Commercial Van boasts features like emergency braking, driver assist, and a comprehensive camera system, and is touted as one of the safest and most advanced commercial vehicles currently available.
As of October, Amazon has deployed over 10,000 Rivian Electric Delivery Vehicles (EDVs) and aims to reach its 100,000-vehicle target. Following the announcement of the AT&T partnership, Rivian's stock saw a 12% jump following the announcement.
Tesla's Model 3 and Y to See Reduced Federal Tax Credits
Tesla announced significant changes to the federal tax credits for its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Starting January 1, 2024, the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range versions will lose the entire $7,500 federal tax credit. This adjustment is due to evolving eligibility criteria, particularly focusing on the sourcing and components of the electric vehicles.
The criteria for the federal electric vehicle clean vehicle tax credit are becoming increasingly stringent. This includes the requirement for more North America-built batteries and materials. Tesla initially expected the Model 3 RWD and Long Range to lose only half the credit under these new rules. However, it's now confirmed that they will lose the full credit, possibly linked to these models using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells imported from China.
Tesla mentioned that the Model Y is also likely to experience reductions in its tax credits, although specific details about which versions and the extent of the reductions are not yet confirmed.
Tesla is working on increasing local battery production in the U.S. to comply with the new criteria and regain access to full tax credits for its vehicles. Used Teslas (like the ones you find at Recharged) will still be eligible for a $4,000 tax credit if priced under $25,000.
